A Cry for Freedom: DRC
A conflict that claimed at least four million lives, the people of the DRC are preparing for the country's first ever free elections. Can the tragic history be forgotten?
Although a peace agreement was signed, three years later warring tribes and militia groups stalk the country.
Right now, people believe they have reason to hope. The country is now preparing for elections. Although the Congolese people have been horrifically affected by the conflicts, the people are united one one thing - the desire to democratically vote. The hope is that democracy will bring peace. Over 25 million have registered to vote a president.
No country in the world has as much untapped potential as Congo. Its vast natural resources have been used and abused for centuries by both the west and its African neighbors. Congo has an enormous gold and diamond researve. Congo having a reserve of cobalt which is used in mobile phones, remote controls and computer games consoles, is proving more lucrative than any other stone found in Congo. If the resources could be used to benefit the people instead of the companies, the DRC could become the richest country in all of Africa.
